Shostakovich's Hidden Messages
Dmitri Shostakovich’s career and life were put in jeopardy in 1936 when Stalin heard his latest opera. The next day, official news outlets launched a fierce attack calling it “chaos instead of music.” To save his family and his own life, Shostakovich cancelled the premiere of his fourth symphony, which he knew would spell the end for him and his career, and wrote a completely new and glorious fifth symphony. While it may have satisfied Stalin and the other soviet officials, many keen observers have pointed out that Shostakovich may have hidden several musical messages in support of the common person and in opposition to this cruel regime. Come join Ismael Sandoval as we venture deeper into this perilous situation and the resulting iconic piece of music. Pre-dinner evening at ArtsBuild. 5:30-7:30 PM – Hor d’oeuvres and Cocktails.
