Stravinsky’s Firebird Airing June 7, 2020 | 4:00 PM Originally Performed January 17, 2019 Kayoko Dan, conductor Bob Burks and Carey Shinbaum, oboe TCHAIKOVSKY - The Tempest Fantasy-Overture, op.18 ALAN ELKINS - Double Concerto STRAVINSKY - Suite (1919 version) from The Firebird Referred to as a “symphonic fantasia,” Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest embodies the energy of a powerful storm with dramatic percussion, surging strings, and a commanding bass fanfare. The evening also featured local composer Alan Elkins’ Double Concerto and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Stravinsky’s first ballet, Firebird became an instant success and remains his most popular orchestral work to this day. Powerful, mysterious, beautiful, and exhilarating, this 1919 suite from the ballet will take your breath away! The oboe was the highlight of the evening with special performances from CSO oboist Carey Shinbaum and former Principal Oboe Bob Burks. Bob passed away unexpectedly one year ago this week, and we would like to dedicate the rebroadcast to this talented musician and much missed colleague.
