FAQ

How do I purchase tickets?

Tickets for CSO performances may be purchased by calling the CSO Box Office at 423.267.8583, through the link at the top of the CSO website, or by visiting the CSO at 701 Broad Street. Regular Box Office hours are Monday-Friday, 10-5.  Depending on availability, tickets are also available at the concert box office 1 1/2 hours prior to concerts at the Tivoli Theatre and 1 hour prior to concerts at the Read House or Volkswagen.

What do I wear?

There is not a dress code for the CSO; come in something that makes you comfortable. Masterworks performances generally tend to be the most formal and people typically dress in “Sunday best” or business meeting attire. Pops, Volkswagen, and Chamber performances are a little more relaxed, with attire ranging from jeans to dresses and suits.

Can I bring my children to a CSO concert?

Children are welcome and encouraged to attend all CSO concerts.  Concerts typically last for 2 hours, with a 15-20 minute intermission approximately 45 minutes in to the concert.  Some concerts may be more appropriate for children, such as our CSO Family Concert or Home for the Holidays matinee.  For Masterworks performances, children 17 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission. For other regular series concert, there is a $15 ticket price for children under the age of 18.

Are your performance venues ADA compliant?

Yes! Our major performance venues (the Tivoli Theatre, Memorial Auditorium, Read House, and Volkswagen Conference Center) are ADA compliant. Please let the box office know when ordering tickets if you require special seating or are in a wheelchair so they can make the appropriate seating arrangement. Please see an usher or CSO staff member if you require extra assistance.

Where do I park?

For concerts at the Tivoli Theatre, Memorial Auditorium, or Read House, there is a large amount of street parking and also several lots and garages where you may pay to park.  The closest garage to the Tivoli Theatre is on 7th street, between Broad and Chestnut. For concerts at Volkswagen, there is a free, large parking lot in front of and to the left of the entrance.

What time should I arrive?

The Box Office at the Tivoli opens 1 1/2 hours before the concert start time and the Box Office at the Read House and Volkswagen opens 1 hour before the concert start time. Doors open, typically, one hour prior to concert start time. If you need to buy a ticket, it’s best to get there early so you can get the best seat. If you already have your ticket or need to pick it up at Will Call, arriving at least 30 minutes before show time will give you plenty of time to find parking, avoid any lines, people watch, and browse through the program.

What should I do if I will be late?

The Box Office remains open 30 minutes after the start of the program. If you are not seated by the time the Orchestra begins playing the program, you will have to wait until a break in the music or intermission to take your seat.

How long is the concert?

CSO performance times vary, but are about two hours long with at least one 20 minute intermission.

When do I clap?

CSO musicians LOVE to hear people applauding. But, sometimes at a classical concert, there are times when you don’t applaud. For our Masterworks concerts, people generally clap after the entire piece is done. There may be three or four “parts” or movements in each piece, but it’s best to wait until after the entire piece is performed. For Pops, Chamber, and Volkswagen concerts, applause depends on what was just played and any soloists.  If in doubt, watch the conductor to completely lower their arms and begin to acknowledge the orchestra.  If still in doubt, wait until others are clapping and follow their lead!

Is there anything I should avoid during the performance?

Even the smallest sounds are amplified in a performance hall. Before the performance begins, please unwrap candy, turn down hearing aids and turn off all pagers, cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. Photography and sound recordings are not permitted. Avoiding these and other distractions helps create an environment in which the music can be heard and enjoyed by all.  If you are a student and would like to take notes for your paper, please ask the box office or an usher to seat you close to the stage or towards the back of the hall so you can have some light to write.

Where can I get a program book?


After purchasing a ticket and entering the performance hall or lobby, a greeter will give you a program book.  Should you require a signature for a class, please ask a volunteer to help you find a CSO staff member who can sign for you after the concert.

Can I get something to eat nearby?


For concerts at the Tivoli Theatre, Memorial Auditorium, or Read House, there are concessions available in the lobby.  There are also many restaurants and shops only a few blocks away! Head to the Starbucks in the lobby of the Sheraton Read House, Community Pie (a favorite of many CSO musicians), or Big River Grille. After the concert, head over to City Café or Porters Steakhouse where CSO musicians and Guest Artists might be eating after the concert.

The Volkswagen Conference Center occasionally has a small concession stand that serves snacks and drinks, which may be taken in the hall.

I am involved in a charity auction or other fundraiser and would like the CSO to donate tickets.

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera is proud to build connections between the CSO and the Chattanooga community by supporting fellow nonprofits with ticket donations for use in fundraisers and silent auctions.

Please note that we have a limited number of tickets to donate and we receive an enormous amount of requests.  Due to our large volume of requests, we will only accept donation requests via fax or mail. And while we would like to grant all donation requests, we are simply unable to fulfill them all. We will only contact you if your request is granted.  Priority will be given to nonprofit arts organizations and educational organizations.

Please read the following carefully before applying for a ticket donation:

  • The benefiting organization must be a 501c3 organization
  • Requests must be received 4 weeks in advance
  • Requests must be on letterhead, and include the event name, date, and description; the contact’s name and email; and the mailing address the donation should be sent to.
  • Organizations (both benefiting and requesting) are limited to one request in a twelve month period.
